Lego Museum, Prague

A fun museum for kids and adults to visit is the Lego Museum in Prague. On our recent trip to Prague, we enjoyed looking at the models and playing with the Lego.

The cubic structural evolution project: Olafur Eliasson

On our travels in New Zealand we visited the Hastings City Art Gallery and we interacted with an exhibit:
The cubic structural evolution project, 2004, is a hands-on installation by Danish-Icelandic artist, Olafur Eliasson. Comprising thousands of pieces of white Lego bricks scattered on a large table, the work invites Gallery visitors to become ‘architects’ by using the Lego to create endlessly re-forming structures limited only by imagination.Towering cityscapes emerge out of the rubble of Lego bricks and constantly evolve as new visitors contribute to the work through construction, modification, destruction and re-construction – processes inherent to the lifecycle of any metropolis.

My children and nephews changing the sculpture

It was fun to construct and add our versions of buildings, ladders, Donkey Kong, King Kong and other creations to the large white Lego structures.

The exhibit continues until 28 August 2016

What did the gadget elves bring you this Christmas?

.
Our household was blessed with 432 rare earth magnetic spheres, a staple-free stapler and a ThinkGeek catalog - thanks Bro! Also in the gadget gifts were a couple of headsets, chemistry set, a train set and "Built to Last" by David Macaulay.

Thanks everyone.

Happy New Year!

Robotic Balls

Controlled by a smart phone, these robotic balls (in prototype) from Gearbox have a gyroscope, compass and other cool technology built in so when you tilt the phone, the ball moves in that direction. Hackable, the ball's serial port can be used to control other devices. Fun cat teasing toys.

This startup says "play with our balls, please!"

Model railroads - the analog version of SimCity

When I was about 8 years old, a friend's Dad had a model railway set up in their shed. It was nothing compared to this huge layout of the Diablo Valley Lines (imaginary railroad company) at Walnut Creek Model Railroad Society.

In November, I blogged about the Pentultimate. The latest development from PuzzleForge is the Petaminx.

This amazing custom built puzzle took hours to make. It has 975 parts (not counting the 1212 hand stuck stickers).

Riding the Robot Caterpillar

My kids rode a robot caterpillar at the local mall the other night.

The guy controlling seemed to have a wireless remote control to start and stop it, but otherwise it followed the black lines on the floor.

Christmas Gadgets

The Christmas season is approaching. Rapidly. It usually sneaks up on us, but this year we'll be ready for it. Soon it will be time to put up decorations and lights. Using the most gadgets possible.

We have had a very small tree for the last few years. We bought it when we were moving around a lot and needed something easy to move. It stands about 30 cm tall and has fibre optics in the branches lit by alternating red and white lights in the base.

We're thinking of getting something a bit bigger this year (so we can fit more gadget presents under it). Any suggestions for customizing, upgrading or generally improving on the standard garden variety tree would be appreciated.
